Here are my top 10 things to do in Lisbon — the perfect mix of culture, colour, and coastal breeze.
Lisbon is a city that hums with sunlight and soul. From the echo of Fado music drifting through narrow alleys to the golden glow of trams winding up its hills, Portugal’s capital captures every traveller’s heart in its own effortless way. Whether you’re here for the food, the history, or the views, Lisbon’s blend of charm and authenticity makes it unforgettable.

1. Ride the Iconic Tram 28
No trip to Lisbon is complete without hopping aboard the city’s famous yellow tram. Tram 28 rattles its way through the Alfama, Baixa, and Estrela districts, offering a front-row seat to Lisbon’s postcard-perfect streets. Go early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid crowds, and keep your camera ready — every turn reveals another frame-worthy view.

2. Wander Through Alfama’s Winding Lanes
Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood and easily its most atmospheric. Lose yourself in its cobbled streets, pastel houses, and laundry hanging from windows that tell stories of everyday life. Stop for a drink at a small tasca (local tavern), listen to live Fado, and let the neighbourhood’s rhythm slow you down.

3. Visit Belém Tower & Jerónimos Monastery
Standing guard at the edge of the Tagus River, Belém Tower is one of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks — a 16th-century reminder of Portugal’s seafaring glory. Just a short walk away, the Jerónimos Monastery stuns with its intricate Manueline architecture. Both are UNESCO-listed and together tell the story of Lisbon’s Age of Discovery.

4. Treat Yourself to a Pastel de Belém
You can’t leave Lisbon without tasting one of these heavenly custard tarts. The original Pastéis de Belém bakery has been serving them since 1837 — crisp, creamy perfection dusted with cinnamon and sugar. Grab one (or three) warm from the oven and eat it outside before it cools.

5. Explore LX Factory
A creative hub set inside a converted industrial complex, LX Factory buzzes with life. You’ll find quirky boutiques, rooftop bars, art murals, and some of Lisbon’s coolest cafes. Don’t miss Ler Devagar, one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world — housed inside a former printing press, complete with a flying bicycle sculpture suspended above the stacks.

6. Soak Up the View at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte
Lisbon is spread across seven hills, and each one hides a spectacular viewpoint. My favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, offering panoramic views of the famous 25 de Abril Bridge over the terracotta rooftops. Come at sunset for soft light and live music — it’s pure Lisbon magic.

7. Dive Into Local Life at Time Out Market
This vibrant food hall near Cais do Sodré brings together Lisbon’s top chefs and eateries under one roof. From octopus salad to modern fusion dishes, every stall is an invitation to indulge. Grab a glass of Vinho Verde and people-watch — it’s busy, lively, and full of flavour.

8. Stroll Along the Tagus at Ribeira das Naus
For a peaceful moment, walk the riverfront promenade between Praça do Comércio and Cais do Sodré. Locals come here to sunbathe, chat, or dip their toes in the cool water. Stay for sunset — the golden light over the bridge and river feels like pure serenity after a day of sightseeing.

9. Discover the Pink Street Nightlife
Lisbon’s most Instagram-famous street, Rua Nova do Carvalho, is known simply as Pink Street. Once part of the city’s red-light district, it’s now a colourful nightlife hub filled with bars, live music, and photo ops galore. It’s kitschy, chaotic, and unforgettable — Lisbon’s fun side on full display.

10. Cross the River to Cristo Rei
For one last perspective, take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas, then a bus or walk up to Cristo Rei — Lisbon’s answer to Rio’s Christ the Redeemer. From the base, you’ll get one of the most sweeping views of the city skyline, bridge, and shimmering Tagus below.
Final Thoughts
Lisbon is a city that lingers — in the sound of distant guitars, the salt of the sea breeze and the warmth of the sunset light. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, to wander without a plan, and to be.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or a week, every tram ride and every pastel carries a little piece of Lisbon’s heart.
